FLASS held the Faculty Assembly-cum-Awards Presentation Ceremony on 21 July, 2023. In the presence of faculty’s senior management staff, Chair Professors, department heads and centre directors, Dean of FLASS Professor Li Wai-keung delivered an opening remark to welcome all new students starting their studies in September for the 2023/24 academic year. After the speech, Professor Li presented the 2022/23 FLASS Teaching Award and Caring Teacher Award to honour colleagues who had outstanding performance in teaching and caring for students in the past academic year.
The Faculty Teaching Award of this academic year went to the Business Studies Team from the Department of Social Sciences*, including team leader Professor Christina Yu Wai-mui, Dr Tan Weiqiang, Dr Eddie Cheng Wai-lun, Dr Amanda Chu Man-ying, Dr Eric Law Kim-fai and Dr Vincent Cheng Wan-suen. The team empowered students by teaching them cutting-edge theories and concepts with real-life practices through collaborative and problem-based learning.
The team led the development of business-related programmes and courses including the Master of Arts in Personal Finance Education (MAPFE) programme launched in 2020/21 academic year, pioneering personal financial education in Hong Kong. Based on its experience running the MAPFE programme, the team is currently developing an undergraduate programme for personal finance education. This will help further develop personal finance as one of FLASS’s distinctive strengths. The winning team has also shown distinguished performance in carrying out different teaching and learning activities to advance students’ learning. The team’s proactive and outstanding work on personal financial education has won many team-based and individual awards from the finance and education fields.

The Faculty Caring Teacher Award was given to Mr Roy Chan Ching-yat, Senior Lecturer II from the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE), in recognition of his teaching philosophy that embraces students’ uniqueness. Roy’s teaching also emphasises unleashing students’ potential, leading students to empower themselves and support each other. He played an instrumental role at HPE in the implementation of Life, Positive, and Values Education (LPVE) and T-standard from the Committee on Professional Development of Teachers and Principals (COTAP) in courses, field experience, as well as students’ university life. Roy believes that educators are responsible not only for students’ academic outcomes, but also their whole-person development. He also holds the view that teachers should teach students how to care about vulnerable members of the community.
Dr Zhang Qiaoping, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, received the Certificate of Merit for the Faculty Caring Teacher Award. Dr Zhang’s research interests and publications mainly focus on mathematics teacher education and affects domains, such as attitudes, beliefs and values, in mathematics education. His research subjects include primary and secondary school teachers and students, as well as pre-service and in-service teachers in universities. His research findings have been published in various internationally and regionally refereed journals and books.
Professor Li congratulated and thanked all the award-winners for their enthusiasm for uncovering knowledge and attending to students’ learning needs. He said, “All teaching staff at FLASS have worked together to create an environment in which students of different learning abilities and expectations can thrive. I hope these awards will encourage all FLASS colleagues to continue to be aware of the diversified learning needs of students and to support their intellectual and personal growth.”
